backyard beautiful {houston landscaping makeover!}

backyard oasis

Last week, we showed you the before and after of Cathy's own backyard. We worked with J. Branch Landscaping and couldn't be happier with the transformation. Click here to see the before and after, and keep reading for the full reveal of this project!

Before and After

BEFORE 2.jpg

Cathy wanted plenty of seating in the new outdoor living space. The sofa has sunbrella weather-resistant cushions and the teak furniture is made to withstand all kinds of weather. She added throw pillows with a pop of orange to coordinate with her front and backdoor - Hermes orange! Cathy was inspired to paint her front door a bright color after visiting a dear friend in Virginia last year. During this backyard project, she painted the backdoor to match, too.

I love the sound of fountains in a yard! says Cathy. She found this one at Adkins Antiques off Fannin near downtown. If you've never been there, we suggest a visit - and tell them we sent you! Jobi and Cathy also planned these urn planters for height and added interest in the space.

We can't wait to pop up our feet with a glass of wine in the evenings this summer. (Well, early summer at least. This is Houston, after all.)

Above, a work in progress. Getting ready to set the pathway.

Part of the backyard renovation included redoing some of the draining in the space - we love the brick pathways and new travertine patio. It really gives the space a clean, finished look without being too fussy.

Above, Cathy's golden retriever Tres inspects the area before plants are added. Cathy and Jobi used many of her existing plants, and also added lots of new ones. This large palm tree in the back, for example, was something Cathy thought definitely needed to go. But Jobi suggested trimming it up and keeping it for added shade and coverage. It looks so much better!

Here's a view of the backdoor, freshly painted orange, the new travertine patio that is very easy to sweep and clean when guests are coming, the lantern Cathy added, and this antique table that is great for serving beverages and appetizers outside. Cathy always had entertaining in mind when she thought out this space.

Did you know basil is supposed to keep mosquitos away? It's true! Cathy potted several containers of basil and other herbs throughout the yard, but these are right by her back door for quick access from the kitchen. And she loooooves antique goat carts!

Near the master bedroom door, Cathy added two chairs for a small sitting area and antique painted shutters for a splash of color. These shutters came off an old Houston home - we found them at Adkins Antiques!

Again, Jobi and his team at J. Branch Landscaping were fantastic to work with and we hope to work with them again soon. We can't get over how wonderful the backyard looks and feels!

Thanks for touring this backyard with us!
