Round Top {shopping guide}

Whether you're a first-timer or a Round Top pro, we've put together some shopping inspiration for you.

Round Top Antiques Week is huge - well, this is Texas, after all. RT Antiques Week had quite the buzz the last few years -Country Living and Southern Living magazines, The Huffington Post, The Today Show, countless other national entities giving a shout-out to this tiny town and it's biannual antique festival.

So yes, it's huge, and infamous, and we can hardly contain our excitement each spring and fall. Others approach it with a more tentative outlook. What should I even look for? How do I know I'm getting a good deal? Where should I go? In our Round Top "Round Up" post, we gave you the highlights. Now we're going to share some shopping pointers.

First off, have a vision. People often ask Cathy what they should look for. Know your home, know your style, and you'll be off and running. In this picture below (which we found using the hashtag #roundtop by the way) an At Home In Arkansas magazine shows how these antique shutters can be used. They look fantastic, right? Well, they were once just lying in a field in Round Top/Warrenton waiting for an owner with imagination.

See below for a shot of Cathy's farmhouse that she styled in New Ulm. Most of what you see is a Round Top find! The antique wire light fixture over the breakfast room table, check. The willow wrapped lamp, check. The antique church, check. The long table, check. Antique basket, check. Antique quilts, check. Antique urns, check. Were they all purchased at once? No. But you can see that a few years of Round Top collections can make a happy (stylish) home!

Endless Options

You could spend weeks combing through the different areas and dealers' booths and still not hit them all. Don't let yourself get too overwhelmed! Are you looking for a rug? Looking for some furniture? Maybe just tagging along with friends for a fun day-trip from Houston. Price tags at antiques week are big and small. Have fun, think outside the box, and enjoy the ride!

Cathy's Faves

Cathy has numerous treasures in her home that she found at Round Top antiques week. She found an antique clock that's 14 feet tall for her husband, Tom and gave it to him for their 25th wedding anniversary. He was quite the clock connoisseur! She's also found unique wedding gifts, like an antique carving set she gave to close friends' son and his new bride! And, she loves the white linen night gowns sold near the Round Top square. "They're the softest I've ever found. I love to give these to friends as a birthday gift!"

Pictured right, Cathy purchased an old metal bucket and had it made into a light fixture for this farmhouse. The arrow and bench down the hall are also RT purchases!

If You're On a Budget

If you're not looking for big-ticket items, what should you keep an eye out for? Antique books look great stacked on a side table or in a bookcase. Glassware like antique bottles or vases can be used immediately in your home as accessories. Or you might score a great chalkboard for your kitchen or laundry room.

The Vintage Round Top

We'd like to take a minute to tip our hat fellow interior designers at The Vintage Round Top - we think the rental home they've furnished in Round Top, Texas is the perfect inspiration to show you how Round Top purchases can be pulled together to create a great athestic. You can visit their website to see more. They also have a booth at the Round Top Vintage Market - we plan to stop by and say hi on our next trip!
