Round Top "Round Up" {insider's guide to antiques week}

Questions have been pouring in about Round Top. Where should we go? What should we look for? What's a good deal? What's a good find? When we're hungry, where should we eat?

Fear not, dear friends. We've rounded up all of Cathy's best tips to share with you. Cathy loves going to Round Top with friends and has been doing so for too many years to count. But even if you're not going with Cathy, you can take her advice with you!

Antiques Week- when in the world is it?!

howdy.roundtop.jpg

Round Top's twice-a-year antiques fair has grown exponentially, and sometimes making sense of what dealer is open when is overwhelming. When you get to Round Top, or surrounding towns, pick up a Show Daily free magazine. It has everything you need to know, is color coded by area/vendor, and this is their largest issue yet. But don't worry - if you're reading this from Houston and can't grab a magazine right now, we're including their best scoop here.

September 19 - October 4 (Fall 2014)

For a full calendar, click here. For some of our favorites, see below.

Blue Hills, 9/20-10/4

We love Blue Hills! Cathy will tell you, they've got the cleanest restrooms in the whole area. And, their BBQ/snack shack benefits a local Methodist church. Cathy loves to grab a quick bite and diet dr. pepper here, while listening to the "Texas Trove," a musical group of teenaged boys playing gospel/blue grass music. You won't be able to stop yourself from singing along! They'll be there 9/27 and 9/28. The dealers at Blue Hills are great...see below for a few pictures.

Location - off 237 between Round Top and Carmine.

La Bahia, 9/26-10/4

Located off 290W at TX 237, Burton, Texas. La Bahia has multiple vendors and a wide range of items - you're almost sure to find at least one treasure here, says Cathy. It's one of her top pics. Go explore! Be sure to tell us what you found!

Warrenton, 9/24-10/4

It's hard to narrow down a specific spot among the fields of Warrenton. In the past, we've scored great finds at Robinson field (great name, if we say so) EX-CESS, Zapp Hall and field, among many others. Bring cash for parking. The Show Daily (magazine we mentioned earlier) website has a lot of info. Click here.

Marburger 9/30 - 10/4

At Marburger Farm, your paid admission will grant you access to more than 350 vendors and a wide collection of vintage and antiques. Visit their website here. And, put em in your GPS - 2248 Texas 237, Round Top, Texas.

Neese House, 9/20 - 10/5

Neese House, Warrenton Texas

Neese House, Warrenton Texas

The Neese House will be open this fall and we can't wait to take a peek! Sterling McCall's daughter, Allison, will be showing inside this historic two-story home in Warrenton. Antqiues from the Faith Bybee estate, vintage glassware, furniture and more! No admission charge. The house was built in 1869 by William Neese, an early German settler and merchant. The home was well known in the area for it's large ballroom, and many Warrenton settlers attending parties and dances at the house. The home is currently being restored.

What To Take

If you've never been, dress comfy. Boots that were made for walkin' and that sort of thing. We recommend sunscreen and/or a hat to shield your face in the fields. Plenty of cash or your check book. A bottle of water, some reusable tote bags to carry your treasures, an SUV with plenty of space for larger items. Don't be afraid to ask vendors their "best price" if you're trying to strike a deal. It's a great idea to go with a list of things you're looking for (ie, two side chairs) or just go with a sense of adventure and know what you like (or collect.)

What to Eat

You'll find all kinds of food vendors tucked among the buildings and fields. Be brave and try one! We mentioned we LOVE the food served at Blue Hills. Royers on the square will be packed, and we mean packed. Their daughter opened Royer's Pie Haven off the square, too, and the lines might be shorter over yonder. (But the pie is just as good!)
