bookcase bonanza {styling bookcases}

Styling bookcases is something our designer, Cathy, can practically do in her sleep. But for many of us, including her daughter Courtney, it just doesn't come so easy. We asked Cathy to give us some pointers for styling our own bookcases and bookshelves. Here are her eight essential tips for beautiful bookcases!

1) Start Fresh

Remove everything currently on your shelves, Cathy says. Important to get a fresh start!

2) Rearrange

Nothing can back to its previous place. Time to shake things up!

3) Readjust

If your shelves are adjustable, remove one. This will provide space to display a larger item, such as a small painting or a large container.

4) Minimize

Think minimal. One or two striking objects makes much more of a statement than numerous small ones.

5) Plates, please!

Plates hung on the back of a bookcase, or displayed on a easel, provide an instant pop. Azulina ceramics are my current fave!

6) Books, basically

Of course you can have actual books on your bookcase! Try stacking 3-5 books horizontally instead of standing them vertically. Then you can place an object on top, if you choose.

7) Use a Tray

If you have cherished mementos that are numerous and small, try grouping them on a tray. The tray provides dimension and pulls them together for more impact.

8) Get Personal

Personal items help tell your story. Use an antique camera that belonged to your mom, a bowl filled with small travel souvenirs. Don't be afraid to be bold! It makes it you
